There’s Something in the Woods…

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives Cam and Kyle start the show off by bringing up how surgeons used a new technique to attach a thought-controlled robot arm directly to an amputee’s stump, giving him a far greater range of motion with the advanced prosthetic limb. The system, involving an implant inserted into the bone at the end of the residual limb, allows test patient Johnny Matheny to use the arm without the constraining and sometimes uncomfortable harness he previously used when experimenting with the Modular Prosthetic Limb (MPL). Then, some stone tools found on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi predate the arrival of modern humans to the area by more than 60,000 years—but researchers aren’t sure who made them. The perplexing artifacts, announced in Nature magazine, are most likely between 118,000 and 194,000 years old, though some may be even older. The keen-edged flakes of stone were excavated from an ancient river floodplain in southwest Sulawesi, near the present-day village of Talepu. Some even bear telltale signs of being hammered into shape. Then, the latest numbers on American orange production are out from the National Agricultural Statistics Service, and the news is not good. Since 2012, more than a third of all American oranges have died out—and the numbers get even grimmer if you look at just Florida, which has lost about half its crop in that time. Then, the 40th Anniversary of the scariest documented encounter with Texas’ Big Bird! just occurred this last week. It occurred just north of Raymondville in Willacy County one evening on January 14th, 1976. Then after the break the boys get into some strange encounters in the woods. Finally, artist George Coghill launches his fifth Kickstarter campaign, “Ghost Guard” on January 25, 2016. The campaign is raising funds to help manufacture his artist merchandise set which will feature embroidered patches, an enamel lapel pin and a screen-printed identification card. All items will include glow-in-the-dark features. Check it Out! Thanks for listening to Expanded Perspectives! Please write and rate the show for us on iTunes.
